I mentioned in my last post about the equipment we're taking with us to Denver. Well, that's only part of what we'll need to bring you our coverage of the Democratic National Convention next week. Our engineering and IT departments have been hard at work for the past few months making sure all the video and interviews we record in Denver make it back home and onto your TVs.
When I covered the Republican convention in Philadelphia with Rob Vaughn and Wendy Davis in 2000, most of what we shot was transmitted to our station via satellite. But technology has come a long way since then. Thanks to our new high-definition digital video cameras (no tapes), we'll be sending mostly everything back from Denver over a high-speed computer connection.
And I'll be using another computer, along with a BlackBerry, a video camera, a digital still camera, and a cell phone camera, to bring you coverage of the convention on our website.
Wow. I'm impressed with the changes in news gathering technology. Let's hope it all works when the journalists from around the world gather in one place!
