Bill and I just came off the floor of the arena after being with the Pennsylvania delegation as Barack Obama was awarded enough delegates to win the Democratic nomination for president. Governor Ed Rendell was set to announce Pennsylvania's delegates, but New York had enough to put him over the top. Hillary Clinton announced that her state was awarding its delegates to Obama.
I was the first to interview Rendell after Obama won the nomination. He told me, "History was just made with the first African American nominee of a major party. It's a great day for Democrats, and better still, a great day for America."
It's not easy to describe the level of excitement among the thousands of people as they rose to their feet in applause inside the jam-packed arena. You'll get a better sense of it by watching the video on our homepage.
I also spoke with Lehigh County Executive Don Cunningham. "I think it's great that it's over. We have the unity of everything moving forward," he told me. "It was really nice to see that Hillary was the one to put it over the top." Obama will formally accept the nomination in a speech before more than 75,000 people at nearby INVESCO Field tomorrow night.
